The Nigeria Police Force in Ogun State has arrested a 27-year-old man, identified as Chidi Ebere, in connection with the killing of a commercial motorcyclist in Igbesa, a community within Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, in what authorities describe as a violent robbery attempt that turned fatal.
According to police accounts, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when the suspect allegedly posed as a passenger and boarded a motorcycle operated by the victim, Sunday Ogbu, aged 36. Investigators say the situation escalated shortly after the journey began, when the suspect reportedly attempted to seize the motorcycle by force.
During the encounter, a struggle broke out between both men, during which the suspect allegedly attacked the rider with a knife. The victim sustained critical injuries in the process. Witnesses in the area reportedly raised an alarm, drawing attention to the scene and prompting a swift response from security operatives.
The injured motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment but was later confirmed dead due to the severity of his injuries. His death has since sparked grief among residents and members of the local transport community who described him as a hardworking individual.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident through the efforts of detectives from the Igbesa Division. Items believed to be connected to the crime, including the weapon allegedly used in the attack and the motorcycle, were recovered as part of the investigation.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry and prosecution. Officials say the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
