A wave of terror swept through the campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in the early hours of Saturday as a gang of armed robbers attacked students in their hostels, injuring several and making away with phones, laptops, and other valuables, including a car .
The attack occurred at the Ibogun Campus of the university in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State . According to multiple reports, the armed men, numbering about 12, stormed various student hostels around midnight, firing gunshots sporadically to scare the inhabitants .
Eyewitness accounts described a chaotic and traumatic scene. Students ran helter-skelter for safety as the attackers moved from one building to another, breaking into rooms . Some victims sustained injuries, with reports of machete cuts and lacerations from broken glass while trying to escape . Disturbing images shared online appeared to show bloodstains on the walls and floors of some hostels .
A student, Jinadu Michael Mabayomije, recounted his experience on social media, stating that the attackers were heavily armed and operated for several minutes without immediate resistance . During the brazen operation, the assailants stole mobile phones, laptops, and other personal effects, and also made away with a student’s vehicle, which was later reportedly abandoned, apparently due to a lack of fuel .
The President of the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association (NUESA), Oluwafemi Aderupatan, confirmed the incident, lamenting that students have been suffering from such invasions for the past three months . He noted that the police and other security agencies had been frequently alerted to the nefarious activities, but the attacks have persisted .
In response to the attack, the Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation . The command spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident, stating that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ibogun Division and the Area Commander have been deployed to the scene . “The command is on the matter and investigation is ongoing. Extra deployment has been made to the area,” Babaseyi said .
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, also acknowledged the security breach, stating that the institution was working with the appropriate authorities to address the situation permanently . The attack has heightened concerns about the safety of students, particularly those living in off-campus hostels which are often less secure than university-owned accommodation .
