Tension and grief have gripped the Minanata community in Sokoto South Local Government Area following the brutal killing of a 15-year-old volunteer teacher, Malam Usman Halilu. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, has sparked widespread outrage, with residents, civil society groups, and other stakeholders demanding justice during a joint news conference organised by the Minanata Community and the Minanata Future Association on Wednesday.

According to multiple reports, the victim was attacked by one Mansur Mohammed, a resident of the same community. The suspect allegedly stabbed Halilu multiple times during a heated altercation. Reports suggest that the killing may have been linked to a prior dispute stemming from a mobile phone theft case, with the victim reportedly having identified the suspect in connection with a theft allegation. The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by a combined team of police and local vigilantes. The police have since confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that an investigation is ongoing.

Until his death, Halilu was a dedicated volunteer teacher who contributed selflessly to the education sector, teaching at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Minanata and Dallatu Model Primary School within the Sokoto metropolis. His commitment to educating young children, despite his own young age, has made his tragic death particularly devastating for the community.

Residents and civil society groups have expressed outrage over the incident, calling on authorities to ensure a swift and transparent prosecution of the suspect. During the news conference, community leaders decried the rising wave of youth violence and urged the government to take proactive measures to prevent such tragedies. They also appealed to the police to provide adequate security and ensure that justice is served.

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the suspect and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted. The command also urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

The killing of the young teacher has cast a pall over the Minanata community, as friends, family, and residents mourn the loss of a promising young life cut short by violence.
