The Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja, Paul Enenche, has stirred a fresh wave of controversy online after recounting a miraculous testimony involving a bag of rice that he claims refused to diminish after his wife gave out one-tenth of it as tithe. Enenche shared the experience while addressing his congregation, explaining that when he and his wife were newly married, she practiced tithing by setting aside a portion of their food. He described that on one occasion, after she had given away a tenth of the bag of rice, they continued to consume from the remaining portion, but the rice kept replenishing, eventually frightening his wife, who then gave away the entire bag.

The testimony has since generated intense debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the logic and theological basis of the claim. Critics have been quick to ridicule the narrative, with some questioning whether the bag of rice was subject to a mathematical impossibility. Others have taken a more theological stance, arguing that the principle of tithing under the New Testament is not a mandatory requirement but a matter of individual conviction, and that such testimonies risk creating a superstitious approach to giving.

Prominent media personality and self-styled activist, Reno Omokri, who has been a vocal critic of certain prosperity gospel teachings, did not hold back. In a post shared across his social media platforms, Omokri described the testimony as another example of what he called “the commercialization of faith.” He argued that the story reduces the concept of giving to a transactional relationship with God, turning the pulpit into a platform for sensationalism rather than sound doctrine. Omokri further accused some ministers of using such testimonies to manipulate their congregation into giving beyond their means.

On the other hand, another controversial commentator, Daddy Freeze, known for his outspoken criticism of certain church practices, also weighed in on the matter. In a post that quickly went viral, he mocked the testimony, sarcastically suggesting that perhaps the rice was measured with a ‘miracle tape’ that kept stretching. He used the opportunity to reiterate his long-standing position that tithing is not a New Testament injunction for Christians, and that such testimonies are often designed to pressure believers into giving. He warned his followers against being swayed by what he termed “supernatural economics” that are not aligned with biblical context.

However, not all reactions have been negative. Some within the Christian community have defended Enenche, pointing to the testimonies of divine provision recorded in scriptures, such as the widow of Zarephath whose jar of flour and jug of oil did not run dry. They argue that if God could multiply a widow’s flour, He is certainly capable of multiplying a bag of rice. These supporters insist that the testimony is not about arithmetic but about faith, and that it serves as an encouragement to those who trust God with their resources. Others noted that Enenche's larger message likely centered on the principle of honoring God with one's first fruits, and that critics were missing the spiritual point by focusing on the literal details of the story.

Becky Enenche, the pastor's wife, has also previously spoken on the subject of tithing, emphasizing its importance in the Christian walk. In a separate sermon, she warned that missing one's tithe could cause a believer to “go back to square one.” This statement, which resurfaced shortly after Enenche's rice testimony, added another layer to the controversy, with critics accusing the couple of fear-mongering to ensure compliance with tithing. Supporters, however, argue that she was merely stating the biblical principle that consistent obedience is key to walking in God’s blessings.

Regardless of where one stands, Enenche’s testimony has undoubtedly opened a wider conversation about the nature of giving in contemporary Christianity. For believers who see it as an affirmation of their faith, it reinforces the idea that God honors those who honor Him. For skeptics, it serves as a case study of how religious narratives can sometimes blur the lines between faith, mathematics, and common sense. As the debate continues to trend online, the story of the multiplying rice has become a flashpoint for the ongoing discussion about prosperity teachings in Nigeria’s Christian landscape.
