The Ogun State Police Command has rescued a suspected burglar, 41-year-old Olaleye Williams, from a mob attack in the Oluwo community, Odeda Local Government Area of the state, warning residents against taking the law into their hands. The Public Relations Officer of the command, Babaseyi Oluseyi, disclosed this in an exclusive telephone conversation with PUNCH Metro on Thursday, May 28, 2026, stating that the suspect had been on the radar of local traders after repeated shop breaks‑in.

“Detectives of the FUNAAB Division, Ogun State Police Command, have arrested a suspected shop thief, Olaleye Williams, male, 41 years, in connection with recurring theft incidents around the Oluwo area near FUNAAB, Abeokuta,” Babaseyi told PUNCH Metro. He noted that the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, while allegedly attempting to steal goods from a shop following surveillance mounted by traders who had experienced repeated theft in the area. The traders, after tracking the suspect, caught him and inflicted injuries on him before police operatives arrived at the scene. “Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, rescued the suspect from an angry mob, and ensured he was taken for medical attention after sustaining injuries before their arrival,” he said.

Babaseyi confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the matter and reiterated the command’s warning against jungle justice. “The Ogun State Police Command reiterates its warning against jungle justice and urges members of the public to report criminal activities promptly to the police for lawful intervention,” he concluded.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of mob violence in the South‑West, where citizens, frustrated by a perception of slow police response, have increasingly taken to executing their own form of justice. Earlier in May 2026, a Nigerian medical doctor based in the United States narrowly escaped death after a mob attacked him over a false kidnapping allegation in Ibadan, Oyo State. In that incident, the mob had already set the victim’s Lexus SUV ablaze before the police arrived.
