Suspected gunmen on Wednesday night shot the chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, in what authorities have described as an attempted murder with possible political undertones. The attack occurred at about 9:50 p.m. (some police sources gave 11:50 p.m.) in the MDS area near the Osogbo Community Bank axis, throwing residents into panic as gunshots rang out.
According to eyewitness accounts, two armed men on a motorcycle chased a blue Toyota Corolla carrying Ajibola and his friends and opened fire repeatedly. The occupants managed to escape to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters, where they reported the incident before rushing the seriously wounded politician to the University of Osun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. He was said to be on the danger list but later reported to be in stable condition.
The Osun State Police Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident on Thursday. Ojelabi stated that police operatives responded to a distress call, evacuated the victim to a medical facility, and launched a manhunt for the attackers. Exhibits recovered from the scene are undergoing forensic analysis. The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the act and ordered a high-level investigation, directing all relevant units to deploy every available resource to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The Osun State Government, through Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi, condemned the shooting, calling it an unfortunate incident that should not go uninvestigated. Alimi urged the police to conduct a professional and impartial investigation, noting that preliminary indications suggest political colourations.
As of Thursday, the police had not made any arrest. The incident has heightened concerns over political violence in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
