The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman, Amina Maharazu, for allegedly stabbing her co-wife to death during a domestic dispute in the Madachi B area of Gwargwaje, Zaria. The incident, which occurred on the day of Eid‑el‑Kabir celebrations, reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over the sharing of Sallah meat between the children of the two wives.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, 4 June 2026, stating that police officers responded to a distress call from a community leader and arrived at the scene to find the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe abdominal injuries. The victim, whose name has not been officially released, was rushed to a hospital but was later confirmed dead. “The suspect was arrested immediately and has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation into alleged culpable homicide,” Hassan said. He added that the Commissioner of Police commended officers of the Dan Magaji Division for their swift response and professionalism.
The husband of both women, Salisu Haruna, described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that the deceased had played a key role in facilitating his marriage to the suspect. “It is particularly painful because it was the deceased who facilitated my marriage to the woman who eventually became the cause of her death,” Haruna told reporters. He explained that the suspect, who is originally from Kano State, had been living in the area with her mother before he married her. He further alleged that the suspect often became suspicious whenever her child cried, frequently accusing members of the senior wife’s household of mistreating the child.
Community sources told reporters that the altercation may have been triggered by a disagreement over the sharing of Sallah meat, with the suspect allegedly accusing the deceased’s children of receiving a larger portion than her own child. Residents also claimed that the suspect had previously been involved in disputes over minor issues, particularly those involving children, while the deceased was widely regarded as a peaceful and patient member of the community. The deceased, according to sources, had been married for many years and is survived by eight children and several grandchildren.
Police have urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to resolve family disputes through dialogue and legal channels. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be charged to court upon its conclusion.
