An Instagram comedian with nearly 300,000 followers has been arrested after allegedly breaking into a Baton Rouge auto shop where he once worked, smashing a garage window and stealing about $200 from a safe, police said. The suspect, 27-year-old Dejontay Wings, who performed comedy online under the handle “wingstoofunny,” was arrested on Saturday, June 6, 2026, and booked on charges of simple burglary and criminal damage to property, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
The alleged break-in took place around 10:50 p.m. on December 2, 2025, at a Take 5 Oil Change location on Airline Highway, where Wings had worked until he was fired about two weeks earlier. A police arrest warrant detailed how the suspect broke a window in the garage area to enter the business, then moved through the office to locate the safe and removed approximately $200 in cash. Investigators believe Wings’ prior employment gave him knowledge of the building’s layout, including exactly where the safe was kept, making it easier to navigate the property in darkness.
Perhaps the most unusual detail in the case is how investigators identified the suspect. According to police documents, a security camera at the business malfunctioned during the break-in and did not capture a clear image of the intruder’s face. That technical failure might have derailed the investigation entirely if not for the sharp observation of the shop manager. The manager reportedly told police that after reviewing the footage, he recognised the individual by his “distinctive walk” alone. That identification became a central piece of evidence that ultimately led authorities to Wings.
Wings built a substantial online following under the Instagram handle wingstoofunny, amassing approximately 296,000 followers through comedy sketches and low-budget public pranks. He began his career as part of the Baton Rouge comedy crew led by Funny Mike, and his content became popular on Vine in the mid‑2010s before migrating to Instagram. A user on X expressed disbelief, writing: “I think they got the wrong guy my buddy Dejontay would never do anything like that”. On his Instagram story, Wings later posted a video telling viewers “don’t believe that sh*t on the internet” and claimed he did not steal anything. He followed that with a message: “back to basic can’t stop God’s plan”.
If convicted, Wings faces serious prison time. “Simple burglary” is a felony under Louisiana law, punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 years. The criminal damage to property charge carries an additional term ranging from six months to 10 years, depending on the assessed value of the damage.
As of Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Wings remained in custody while the case moves through the Louisiana court system. No trial date has been set, and authorities have not named any other suspects in connection with the incident. The investigation is considered closed following the arrest, according to police.
