Two farmers have been killed in a suspected attack on their farmland along the Ekpenti Farm Road in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, the police confirmed on Wednesday. The victims, identified as Omini Iyam Ebri, 56, and Ubi Ofem Ubi, 58, were shot by unknown gunmen at about 7:05 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026.

According to police sources, the incident was reported at about 10:20 a.m. by Charles Omini Iyam, 28, the son of one of the victims. He alleged that his father was shot in the face and died instantly. The second victim, Ubi Ofem Ubi, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg and was rushed to the General Hospital in Ugep, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the killings and said police operatives, in collaboration with personnel of the Village Community Relations Unit, have been deployed to the area to maintain peace and prevent further escalation. He also said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The attack has heightened tensions between the neighbouring Ugep and Idomi communities, which have experienced periodic clashes in recent months. The Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area, Hon. Yibala Inyang, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to traditional leaders of both communities to identify individuals responsible for reigniting hostilities, warning that failure to comply would attract legal consequences.
