The Ogun State Police Command has decorated 430 junior police officers recently promoted from various ranks, in a ceremony that underscored the Inspector‑General of Police’s commitment to career progression and personnel welfare. The exercise, held at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, and replicated across all formations within the state, saw 6 Sergeants elevated to the rank of Inspector, 4 Corporals promoted to Sergeant, and 420 Constables advanced to the rank of Corporal.

The decoration ceremony was carried out under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, who described the event as a reflection of the welfare‑driven leadership of the Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The IGP has, since assuming office, prioritised the motivation and professional development of officers across all ranks, viewing timely promotions as a critical tool for boosting morale and encouraging personnel to remain steadfast in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

Speaking during the ceremony, CP Ojajuni congratulated the newly promoted officers and charged them to regard their elevation as a call to greater responsibility, discipline, professionalism, and renewed dedication to service. “This promotion is not merely a change of rank or an increase in salary,” the Commissioner told the gathering of officers and their families. “It is an acknowledgment of your diligence, professionalism, and commitment. It is also a demand for more. You must now lead by example, respect human rights, and uphold the rule of law at all times.”

The Commissioner further noted that the Nigeria Police Force, under IGP Disu, has institutionalised a system where hard work and integrity are consistently recognised and rewarded. He pointed to the significant number of junior officers benefitting from the current promotion cycle as proof that the Force is moving away from the era of stagnation and neglect. “When an officer knows that his efforts will be noticed and rewarded, he is inspired to give his best. That is the philosophy driving the welfare initiatives of the IGP,” Ojajuni said.

The decoration exercise, which took place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, was also held in other formations across Ogun State to ensure that officers stationed in remote areas were not left out. Family members of the promoted officers were invited to pin the new ranks on their loved ones, a practice that the command said reinforces the bond between the police and the families who support them. CP Ojajuni expressed gratitude to the families of the officers for their patience and understanding, acknowledging that police work often places tremendous strain on domestic life.

The Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who was represented at the ceremony by the Commissioner of Police, reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of all personnel. In a message delivered by CP Ojajuni, the IGP stated that the current promotion exercise is part of a broader strategy to enhance institutional capacity, operational effectiveness, and service delivery in line with global best practices in policing. “We are building a police force that is professional, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the Nigerian people,” the IGP’s message read. “That vision begins with the officers on the ground. They must be motivated, well‑trained, and properly compensated.”

The promotion of 420 Constables to the rank of Corporal represents the largest single category in the exercise, reflecting the IGP’s focus on the lowest rungs of the force where the majority of front‑line duties are performed. Corporals and Sergeants play essential roles in day‑to‑day policing, from traffic management to crime prevention and community engagement. By advancing such a large number of Constables, the police leadership hopes to inject fresh energy and responsibility into the ranks.

Reactions from the newly promoted officers were overwhelmingly positive. Sergeant‑designate (formerly Corporal) Oluwole Adeyemi, one of the four officers elevated from Corporal to Sergeant, told reporters that the promotion came as a surprise but was deeply appreciated. “We have worked hard, and it feels good that our efforts are being noticed. This will encourage us to do even more,” he said. Similarly, Inspector‑designate Musa Bello, one of the six Sergeants who moved up to Inspector, described the promotion as the culmination of years of dedicated service. “I joined the Force as a Constable 15 years ago. Today, I am an Inspector. It shows that if you remain focused and disciplined, the system will reward you,” he said.

The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to prioritising officers’ welfare and supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, enhancing operational effectiveness, and promoting excellence in service delivery. The command also used the occasion to call on members of the public to continue cooperating with the police, noting that a motivated police force is better positioned to protect lives and property.

The ceremony concluded with a group photograph and a renewed pledge by the decorated officers to discharge their duties with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law. As the 430 newly promoted officers return to their various postings across Ogun State, the challenge now is to translate their elevated ranks into elevated performance. The IGP has made the investment; the people of Ogun State will be watching to see the returns.
