Two persons abducted by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have been rescued unharmed following a swift intervention by local youths who mobilised into the bush with machetes, clubs and hunting dogs. The victims, Mrs Onyinyechi Ekechukwu, a middle‑aged woman, and Mr Izuchukwu Okechi, about 20 years old, were taken at about 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, near Nkpu‑ala, close to the proposed site for the newly flagged‑off Federal Housing Estate at Umuawa along the Umuahia/Uzuakoli road.
According to local sources, the abductors – reportedly six Fulani herdsmen – contacted the family using the woman’s phone number, 08057010965, and demanded a ransom of N10 million. However, before any payment could be made, youths from the Ohuhu community mobilised spontaneously, combing the nearby bush. The rescuers shouted the names of the victims as they advanced. On noticing the approaching crowd and the determination of the hunters, the kidnappers abandoned their captives and fled.
The two victims were found in a bush not far from where they were taken. No ransom was paid. Jubilation has since swept through Ohuhu land as residents celebrate the bravery and swift action of the local youths. The Abia State Police Command had not issued an official statement at the time of this report, but community leaders praised the vigilance and courage of the rescuers.
The incident highlights the growing role of community security initiatives in rural parts of the South‑East, where local vigilantes and hunters often complement formal security agencies in responding to kidnapping and other violent crimes.
