ILORIN, Nigeria – Residents of Igbowu community in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State are living in palpable fear after suspected bandits dropped a handwritten warning note, threatening an imminent attack on the village. The development has forced the community to issue an urgent appeal to the state and federal governments for immediate military deployment to prevent a looming tragedy.
The threat was discovered within the community on Thursday, June 11, 2026. According to multiple residents who spoke with SaharaReporters and other news outlets, the suspected criminals left a brief but chilling inscription at a strategic point in the village. The note read: “Igbowu and get ready for us now bandit come.”
The discovery of the handwritten letter has thrown the agrarian community into a state of high anxiety. Residents fear the warning signals a planned assault by armed gangs, who have increasingly terrorised rural areas of Kwara South in recent months. “The development has heightened fears among residents, who are calling on security agencies and the Kwara State Government to take urgent preventive measures before the threat is carried out,” a report by SaharaReporters noted.
Community members confirmed that they have immediately reported the threat to local vigilante groups and security operatives, but they insist that only a permanent military presence can guarantee their safety. Some indigenes of Igbowu residing in Lagos State told journalists that they have called their relatives back home, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements. “We have communicated with our relatives at home and advised them to be vigilant,” one concerned indigene told SaharaReporters. “We are calling on the Kwara State Government, the Ifelodun Local Government Chairman, and all security agencies to help us and prevent the attack before it takes place.”
The latest threat has exacerbated existing security fears in Kwara South, a region that has witnessed repeated incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks in recent months. Residents pointed to the unresolved abduction of the traditional ruler of Afin-Ile, Oba James Olanipekun, who was kidnapped over two months ago and remains in captivity. Community members also recalled the recent killing of the wife of an ECWA pastor and the abduction of four ECWA church members in the Omu-Aran axis of the state.
“Since the bandits have written to the community, the next step is to prevent the attack before it takes place,” one resident told SaharaReporters, echoing the desperate tone of the community.
In a separate but related development, the Kwara State Government had just days earlier announced an intensified push for a stronger military footprint in vulnerable zones. Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who also serves as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, had on June 9, 2026, met with the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, in Abuja to demand an increased military presence in the state. According to a statement from the government, the governor sought "increased support and cooperation between security agencies and the state, including enhanced military presence in vulnerable communities."
The state government noted that it had already established the Safer Kwara Security Committee and deployed well-trained forest guards to improve surveillance in ungoverned forests. However, for the anxious people of Igbowu, these measures have clearly not been enough to deter the threat now literally on their doorstep.
The Igbowu threat letter comes amid a spate of violent incidents across the state. On Monday, June 8, armed bandits attacked the Rukpete Village in Edu Local Government Area, abducting six residents, including children below the age of 14. That attack reportedly occurred at around 11 p.m., with the gunmen operating without resistance due to a lack of security presence in the remote settlement.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command and the Defence Headquarters had not issued an official response to the threat letter specifically targeting Igbowu. However, a police source confirmed that tactical teams have been placed on alert, and patrols have been intensified in the Ifelodun LGA axis.
For the people of Igbowu, the wait for military boots on the ground is agonising. With a handwritten warning lying as a grim promise of violence, the community has done all it can: raised the alarm, contacted authorities, and prayed. The next move belongs to the government.
