IBADAN, Nigeria – Yoruba nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has formally requested the approval of Governor Seyi Makinde to deploy personnel of his private security outfit, Iru Ekun Security Network, to public schools across Oyo State. The offer arrives amid escalating insecurity, including the abduction of 47 students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026, whose release has not yet been secured.
In a letter dated June 9, 2026, addressed to the Commissioner for Education and copied to the governor, Igboho stated that his security network is prepared to station at least two trained operatives at every public school in the 33 local government areas of the state. The operatives would guard school premises, monitor access points, liaise with school principals and local vigilantes, and prevent unlawful incursions by criminal elements.
The letter, jointly signed by Igboho and Junaid A. Sanusi, the legal adviser of Iru Ekun Security Network, requested that the state government provide detailed data on the number of public schools in the state and their precise locations to facilitate the proposed deployment.
“Sir, Iru Ekun Security Network’s plan, upon receipt of the requested information, is to ensure that at least two trained members of the outfit are stationed at each public school identified across Oyo State,” the letter said.
The outfit also advised the government to erect perimeter fences around all public schools in the state. It argued that fenced school environments would be easier to secure and monitor.
“We equally advise the Oyo State Government to consider the possibility of raising fences around all public schools within Oyo State in order to make the school environment easy to guard by the members of Iru Ekun Security Network stationed to such schools,” the letter added.
While acknowledging the ongoing rescue efforts by the state government and federal security agencies regarding the Oriire victims, Igboho stressed that preventive measures must take priority. He warned that every day without a security deployment exposes children and teachers to avoidable risk.
“Time is of the essence. Every day without preventive deployment exposes our children and teachers to avoidable risk. With proper data and perimeter security, we can create a protective shield around every public school in Oyo State,” the letter said.
The security network expressed its readiness to collaborate with the government, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), school management boards, and community stakeholders.
The Oyo State Government had not issued an official response to the proposal as at Thursday, June 11, 2026. The proposal’s acceptance would mark the first time a private security outfit would be formally integrated into the school security architecture of a state government.
