Suspected terrorists launched coordinated attacks on several communities in Isin and Ifelodun Local Government Areas of Kwara State on Thursday night, June 11, 2026, abducting scores of residents and leaving one person dead after a fierce gun battle in Famole community.
The attackers struck three communities simultaneously around 10 p.m., according to multiple sources familiar with the incidents. The affected communities included Gaa-Oke Abba and Gaa-Alla in Isin Local Government Area, as well as Famole community in Ifelodun Local Government Area. The coordinated timing of the assaults raised concerns among residents about the growing organisation and reach of armed groups operating in the state.
In Gaa-Alla community, at least two persons were confirmed abducted by the terrorists, a source told SaharaReporters. However, the exact number of victims taken from Gaa-Oke Abba could not be immediately ascertained as of the time of filing this report, with efforts ongoing to determine the full extent of the attack in that community. “In Gaa-Alla, two people were taken away by the terrorists,” the source said. The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, while confirming the incident, said he could only confirm the abduction of two persons in Gaa-Alla community as of the time of his statement. He told Tribune that the police, in conjunction with the military and forest guards, are on the trail of the assailants.
The attack on Famole community, located along the Share-Okeode Road near the Oyi River in Oke-Ode Ward II of Ifelodun Local Government Area, turned deadly after residents reportedly engaged the attackers in an exchange of gunfire. One person was killed during the confrontation. “The bandits’ attack on the Famole community in the night resulted in one fatality after an exchange of gunfire,” a source said.
The latest attacks have heightened fear among residents of the affected areas and neighbouring communities, many of whom spent the night trying to account for missing relatives. Several people reportedly abandoned their homes over fears that the attackers could return. The incidents have again exposed the growing insecurity affecting parts of Kwara, particularly rural communities where residents have repeatedly complained about kidnappings and violent attacks in recent months.
Parts of Kwara State, especially the northern senatorial district, have witnessed increasing cases of banditry in recent months. According to Kwara North elders, more than 1,200 lives have been lost to bandit attacks under the Tinubu administration, with thousands displaced from their homes and economic activities severely disrupted. The affected areas include Baruten, Kaiama, Edu, and Patigi local government areas, where armed groups have escalated from isolated kidnappings to large-scale coordinated attacks on communities, highways, and security bases.
On June 10, 2026, the Kwara State Police Command announced the arrest of two suspected bandits and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles in Baruten Local Government Area, a development that appeared to have done little to deter the latest wave of violence. Just a day before the Thursday attacks, residents of Igbowu community in Ifelodun Local Government Area had raised an alarm over a handwritten threat note left by suspected bandits warning of an impending attack. “Igbowu and get ready for us now bandit come,” the note read, written in what appeared to be a deliberate provocation. The threat stirred anxiety among community members, many of whom called on the state and federal governments for immediate military deployment to prevent a looming tragedy.
Security agencies in the state had yet to issue a comprehensive public statement on the Thursday incidents as of the time of this report, though police authorities confirmed they are on the trail of the assailants and have deployed personnel to the affected areas. Many locals have appealed to security agencies to strengthen surveillance and increase the presence of security personnel across vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.
