Nigeria Must Remain Resilient Amid National Challenges — Defence Minister Christopher Musa

On June 12, 2026, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, urged citizens to remain resilient in the face of the country’s ongoing challenges, stating that difficulties are an inevitable part of national life and human existence.

The Defence Minister made the remark in a public message tied to Nigeria’s Democracy Day commemoration on June 12, a nationally recognised day that marks the anniversary of the annulled 1993 presidential election and has been officially observed as Democracy Day since 2018.

In his statement, Musa said: “Nigeria is going through a trying period. As Nigerians, it’s important for us to understand that challenges will always come as long as you live.”

The message was delivered in the context of national reflections on democracy, governance, and security, a period during which government officials often address citizens on unity, stability, and national progress.

General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff who assumed the role of Minister of Defence in December 2025, has consistently emphasized civil support for security institutions as part of broader efforts to address insurgency, banditry, and other security concerns affecting different parts of the country.

June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s political history, commemorating the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the most credible in the nation’s history. The election, won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, was annulled by the military government at the time, leading to prolonged political unrest and eventual democratic reforms.

In 2018, the Nigerian government officially declared June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of the election and its democratic symbolism, replacing May 29 as the country’s national democracy celebration.

This year’s commemoration once again provided a platform for national leaders to reflect on governance challenges, civic responsibility, and the importance of unity in sustaining Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Security remains one of the country’s most pressing issues, with ongoing military operations targeting insurgent groups in the North-East and armed criminal networks in other regions. The Defence Ministry has repeatedly called for stronger collaboration between citizens and security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and operational effectiveness.

General Musa’s remarks align with a broader government narrative encouraging national cohesion and resilience as Nigeria continues to navigate complex economic, political, and security pressures.

The Defence Ministry has not issued additional clarification beyond the quoted statement, but officials continue to emphasize the importance of public cooperation in addressing insecurity and strengthening national stability.
