South Africa has intensified the deportation of undocumented foreign nationals, with hundreds of Nigerians already repatriated as part of ongoing immigration enforcement measures.
The South African Department of Home Affairs confirmed on 11 June 2026 that 586 Nigerian nationals had been processed for repatriation after being found residing in the country illegally. The first repatriation flight departed with 268 passengers, while another flight is scheduled to return the remaining individuals to Nigeria.
Authorities said the exercise forms part of broader efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement and restore compliance with South Africa’s immigration laws.
The repatriation comes amid growing tensions over illegal migration and recent anti-immigration protests in parts of South Africa, where concerns over undocumented migrants have fueled public debate and security concerns.
South African officials stated that all affected Nigerians were documented for return with the cooperation of the Nigerian High Commission and have been prohibited from re-entering South Africa for five years.
While reports have circulated claiming South Africa plans to charge Nigeria for deportation expenses, no official statement confirming such a policy has been released by the South African government.
