Security operatives in Enugu State have arrested six suspected criminal gang members allegedly linked to deadly attacks in parts of the state, recovering a large cache of weapons and ammunition during a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
The breakthrough was made public on Friday, 12 June 2026, during an inspection of recovered exhibits by Governor Peter Mbah at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Enugu.
According to security authorities, the operation followed actionable intelligence that led operatives to a suspected criminal hideout in Gariki, Enugu South Local Government Area, where the suspects were apprehended after a tactical raid.
During the operation, security personnel recovered several sophisticated weapons, including multiple assault rifles, a general-purpose machine gun, a rocket launcher, magazines, grenades, tear-gas equipment, over one thousand rounds of live ammunition, as well as tactical gear and security uniforms believed to be connected to criminal activities.
The operation involved a joint effort by operatives of the Department of State Services, personnel of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, and other security agencies participating in ongoing anti-crime operations across the state.
Governor Peter Mbah described the arrests as a major breakthrough in the fight against violent crime, stating that the success of the operation reflects improved intelligence sharing and stronger collaboration among security agencies.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across Enugu State and ensuring that criminal networks are dismantled.
Also present during the inspection were the DSS Director in Enugu, Humphrey Ohikhuare, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, and the Garrison Commander of the 82 Division, who received the governor and briefed him on the operation.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities and possible links to previous deadly attacks in the state.
The identities of the six arrested suspects have not yet been publicly disclosed as security agencies continue interrogation and intelligence gathering.
