Two Injured As Trailer Plunges From Nkpor Bridge In Anambra, Crashes Into Four Vehicles
A freight trailer carrying a 40‑foot container fell from the Nkpor flyover along the Onitsha–Awka Expressway in Anambra State on Saturday, June 13, 2026, crashing into four other vehicles and leaving two people injured. The accident occurred at approximately 1:00 pm near the busy New Parts Market in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area, causing panic among traders, motorists and commuters.
Eyewitnesses said the truck driver lost control while descending the bridge after the vehicle’s brakes failed. The trailer veered off the structure and plunged onto the highway below, where it struck two commercial shuttle buses and an Audi Volkswagen car. Margaret Onabe, Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, confirmed in a statement that the crash involved four vehicles. The vehicles were identified as a Mercedes‑Benz articulated truck with registration number FTD581XA, a commercial shuttle bus with registration number ENU540ZJ, another commercial shuttle bus with registration number BKL661XA, and an Audi Volkswagen car with registration number ENU528MK.
The FRSC received a distress call at 1:10 pm, and a rescue team from the RS5.31A Upper Iweka Outpost arrived at the scene five minutes later. According to the command, six male adults were involved in the accident. Two of them sustained minor injuries, while the other four escaped unhurt. No fatalities were recorded. The injured victims had already been evacuated to a nearby hospital before the arrival of the rescue team.
An eyewitness who spoke to journalists described the moments before the crash. “The driver of the trailer suddenly lost brake as he was descending the bridge. He lost control, veered off the bridge, and crashed into other vehicles beneath the bridge,” the witness said. “Fortunately, about six passengers who were already inside a shuttle bus beneath the bridge had fled the scene before the trailer fell on the bus, although some of them sustained minor injuries while running away.”
The Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, visited the crash site shortly after the incident to assess the situation. He confirmed that no casualties were recorded and expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, noting that traders, transport operators and other residents in the area escaped the accident unharmed. He urged drivers of heavy‑duty vehicles to strictly adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future and reassured residents of the council’s commitment to improving public safety and strengthening emergency response across the local government area.
The FRSC deployed a heavy‑duty tow truck to clear the obstruction caused by the affected vehicles and prevent secondary crashes. The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, wished the injured a quick recovery and advised motorists, especially operators of articulated vehicles and commercial transport services, to always carry out routine vehicle maintenance and ensure that braking systems are in proper working condition before embarking on any journey.
As of the time of filing this report, normalcy was gradually being restored on the Onitsha–Awka Expressway.
