The Borno State Government has declared Tuesday, 16 June 2026, a public holiday to mark the first day of the Islamic calendar year 1448 AH (After Hijira). The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar.

According to the statement, “His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, mni, FNSE, has declared Tuesday, 1st Day of Muharram 1448 After Hijira (AH), which is equivalent to Tuesday 16th June 2026, as a Public Holiday to commemorate the first day of the Islamic Calendar Year 1448 (AH).”

In the directive, the government urged residents to use the occasion to “rededicate themselves to peaceful coexistence and service to humanity and development.” Tar also called on citizens to embrace “the virtues of unity, solidarity, togetherness, tolerance, justice, mercy and multiculturalism” as a way to ensure national cohesion.

The commissioner reiterated Borno’s commitment to “the unity, prosperity and existence of Nigeria” and noted that Governor Zulum had encouraged people across the state to pray for a “peaceful, plural democratic entity.”

The Islamic New Year, known as Hijri or Muharram, marks the migration (Hijra) of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Because the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles, it is about 11–12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, so the year 1448 AH overlaps parts of both 2026 and 2027.

Tuesday’s holiday will allow workers and residents in Borno to mark the occasion, while government offices, banks, and other public institutions are expected to remain closed for the day.
