A friendly football match between two communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State turned violent on Saturday, June 13, 2026, leaving a young man dead and deepening fears of reprisal attacks in the oil-rich region. Thomas Ogbianawei, an indigene of the Eniwari community, was attacked by suspected members of the rival Opuama team after a dispute on the pitch escalated into a deadly ambush along a remote village road. The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed one arrest and launched a full investigation.

Tensions flared during a football friendly between Eniwari and Opuama when a disagreement broke out among players from both sides. According to multiple community sources, the misunderstanding escalated into a confrontation on the field, although no spectators or match officials were reported to have participated in the clash. While the physical altercation on the pitch was quickly contained, the hostility lingered and took a deadlier turn after the final whistle. Sources say members of the visiting Opuama team, while returning home after the match, encountered Thomas Ogbianawei along the route between Eniwari and Fonibiri communities. They identified him as an indigene of Eniwari and attacked him, inflicting severe injuries from which he later died. The development has thrown the Eniwari community into mourning and heightened tensions between the neighboring villages.

The Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Hon. Target Segibo, who confirmed the incident, has appealed to leaders and residents of both Eniwari and Opuama to exercise restraint and avoid any action capable of escalating the situation. In a statement issued on Sunday by his Press Secretary, Ayibatari Easterday, Hon. Segibo expressed sadness over the incident and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Eniwari Community. Community leaders have similarly urged youths to avoid reprisals that could trigger further bloodshed and have called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and prosecute anyone found culpable. The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the killing, with the command’s spokesman, DSP Musa Mohammed, stating that an investigation has commenced and one suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing. The police have not released the identity of the suspect or the exact charges, but the arrest is seen as a critical step in preventing the situation from spiraling into an inter-community conflict. As the community of Eniwari mourns the loss of Thomas Ogbianawei, the young man who never returned from a day of friendly sport, the people of Southern Ijaw now wait anxiously to see if the suspect’s arrest will bring justice or if the coming days will bring more violence.
