The Lagos State Government has warned that parts of the state may experience heavy rainfall, rising water levels, riverbank overflows and flash floods between 14 and 21 June 2026.
The warning, issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Mahamood Adegbite, followed a flood prediction update from the Federal Ministry of Environment. The update, signed by the Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, Usman Bokani, listed several areas as “Critical Risk Areas”.
The affected areas include Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Lekki, Ojo, Orile-Agege, Surulere, Agege, Alimosho and Kosofe.
Residents in these communities have been advised to maintain an immediate flood watch, identify safe evacuation routes, and protect vulnerable households, particularly children, the elderly, and those living in low-lying areas. The update also warned against settling, trading, or constructing within active floodplains, low-lying drainage corridors, and riverbank areas, noting that such locations are especially prone to flooding during intense rainfall.
Despite the forecast, the government assured residents there is no cause for panic. It emphasised that continuous year‑round maintenance and clearing of primary and secondary drainage channels have been carried out across the state. According to the authorities, these proactive measures have significantly reduced the impact of heavy rainfall since the start of the rainy season and have so far prevented any devastating flooding.
Nevertheless, residents have been urged to monitor weather updates, avoid blocked drainage channels, dispose of waste responsibly, and cooperate with emergency response agencies to ensure public safety. The advisory underscores the importance of preparedness as Lagos enters the peak of its rainy season.
