At least 10 persons have been confirmed dead and seven others injured following an improvised explosive device (IED) blast along the Bagega-Anka road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State, security sources have confirmed. The explosion occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Monday when a commercial Volkswagen Golf 3 wagon carrying passengers from Bagega village to Anka town ran over the device allegedly planted by suspected bandits operating in the area.
The incident took place between Tungar Kudaku and Bagega communities along the road. According to police sources, initial reports indicated one fatality and seven injuries, but an extensive assessment of the scene led to the recovery of nine additional bodies. "Following the deployment of security personnel to the affected area, an extensive assessment was carried out, leading to the recovery of nine additional bodies from the scene of the explosion," a police source told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region.
The Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that the occupants of the vehicle were travelling from Bagega to Anka when the device detonated. One passenger was killed on the spot, while seven others sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby healthcare facility for treatment. The death toll later rose to 10 after additional bodies were recovered from the scene.
Security sources said the IED was planted by suspected bandits who have been terrorising communities along the Bagega-Anka corridor. The attack has renewed calls for urgent action from both the Zamfara State Government and the Federal Government to address the worsening security situation and complete the long-delayed Bagega-Anka road project, which residents say could help reduce such incidents. Police authorities said security measures had been strengthened along the Anka-Bagega corridor to prevent further attacks and reassure road users.
The explosion occurred barely one month after a similar IED blast on the same road claimed six lives. The repeated attacks have left residents and traders living in fear, with many now avoiding the route entirely. For many communities along this road, every journey has become a risk, and the cost continues to be measured in human lives. The security and humanitarian situation in the area remains deeply concerning, with residents calling on both the Zamfara State Government and the Federal Government to take urgent action to address the worsening security situation and complete the long-delayed Bagega-Anka road project.
