ALOR, Nigeria – A young nursing student, Chilaka Vivian, has been found dead in her off‑campus apartment in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, in circumstances that have sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for greater security around student hostels. Vivian, a National Diploma II student at the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, was discovered lifeless in her residence on Sunday, June 14, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Anambra State Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Student Nurses and Midwives (NANSNM).
The association, in a message signed by its Chairman, Comrade Afamuefuna Somtochukwu, announced the tragic loss of their colleague, describing the incident as painful and deeply disturbing. “It is with deep pain and heavy hearts that we announce the tragic death of one of our own — Student Nurse Chilaka Vivian, an ND II student of College of Nursing Sciences Alor, which occurred today, 14th June 2026,” the statement read. “Reports surrounding the incident indicate that she was assaulted before her unfortunate death, while investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.”
Sources close to the investigation disclosed that the landlord of the property where Vivian resided has been taken into police custody to assist with inquiries, as law enforcement officials gather evidence and interview relevant persons to establish the events that led to the student’s death. The Anambra State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, but security sources confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the landlord remains in detention for questioning.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from students and residents, with many calling for a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation. The NANSNM expressed deep concern over the safety of student nurses, noting that the tragedy in Alor follows similar incidents in other states, including Imo, where a nursing student was recently murdered. “This painful incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety and security of student nurses across our institutions. What happened in Imo State and now in Anambra State must never become a recurring story,” the association said. “The lives of student nurses matter, and their safety must be treated as a priority at all times.”
The association extended its condolences to Vivian’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire nursing community, and called on authorities to ensure that justice is served. “Today, we mourn the painful loss of our beloved sister and colleague. We stand in solidarity with her family, friends, classmates, and the entire nursing community during this difficult moment. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
As investigations continue, the death of Chilaka Vivian has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities of students living in off‑campus accommodations and the urgent need for improved security measures around educational institutions. The Anambra State Government and security agencies are yet to provide further details on the incident.
