Vigilant youths of Kufana community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State have apprehended three suspected transformer vandals and handed them over to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation and prosecution, in a demonstration of community resolve to protect critical public infrastructure. The suspects, identified as Denis Reuben of Kurmin Ido, Haruna Ado of Kurmin Kwari, and another individual, were reportedly caught in the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, while allegedly attempting to steal transformer coils.

The arrest was carried out by a patrol team led by Mr. Samaila Akawu, alongside the community Youth Leader, Mr. Chris Lingo, and other vigilant community members. Following the arrest, the suspects were immediately handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution. The swift action by the community has been widely praised as a model of grassroots collaboration in safeguarding public assets.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Council, Hon. Dauda Madaki, commended the vigilance and bravery of the youths, describing their commitment to protecting public infrastructure as commendable and worthy of emulation. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, John Ezra Sojah, on June 16, 2026, Madaki expressed concern over the recurring incidents of vandalism targeting electrical installations across Kajuru Local Government Area, despite the substantial investments made by the council in providing, rehabilitating, and maintaining electricity facilities for residents.

The chairman urged communities across the local government to remain vigilant and continue collaborating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their areas. He noted that acts of vandalism and theft of public infrastructure hinder community development and will not be tolerated. According to Madaki, safeguarding critical public assets, particularly electricity infrastructure, is a collective responsibility that requires active participation from all members of the community.

The council chairman further stated that the arrest of the suspects should serve as a deterrent to individuals involved in the destruction and theft of electricity infrastructure. He assured residents that the council would continue to support community-driven security initiatives aimed at protecting public assets and promoting sustainable development throughout Kajuru Local Government Area.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of infrastructure vandalism across Nigeria, where criminal networks have increasingly targeted power distribution equipment, telecommunication masts, and railway installations for scrap metal and resale. In recent months, several states have reported a surge in transformer vandalism, leading to prolonged power outages and significant economic losses. Community-led initiatives like the one in Kufana have proven effective in complementing the efforts of security agencies, demonstrating the importance of local vigilance in combating such crimes.

As of the time of this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the arrest, but the suspects are expected to face charges in court upon the conclusion of investigations. The Kajuru Local Government Council reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities and security agencies to protect public infrastructure and ensure that perpetrators of vandalism are brought to justice.
