The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a man, Sunday Olawale, for allegedly circulating a false video on social media that claimed bandits had attacked Are Ekiti in Irepodun Ifelodun Local Government Area, an act the police said was capable of causing panic and disrupting public order. The suspect was apprehended on June 14, 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad at the Ekute area of Ado Ekiti.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. According to the police, the suspect was linked to a video that went viral on June 12, 2026, which falsely alleged that armed bandits had stormed the community. Investigations later confirmed that the claim was untrue, and no such attack occurred anywhere in the state.

During interrogation, Olawale confessed to sharing the false report but could not provide any satisfactory reason for his action. He was arrested on charges of cyberstalking and dissemination of false information intended to cause a breakdown of law and order.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti, Michael Falade, warned that the command would not tolerate any act of fake news or content capable of inciting panic among members of the public. He urged social media users to always verify the authenticity of information before sharing. The police reiterated that there was no bandit invasion in Are Ekiti or any part of the state.

The Ekiti State Police Command has observed a recurring pattern of coordinated attempts by individuals to spread false reports of bandit attacks, kidnappings and other security incidents across the state. The command has described the trend as dangerous, unacceptable and capable of generating unnecessary panic among residents.

The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The police have assured residents of their commitment to maintaining law and order and urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
