Social media platforms across Nigeria have been flooded with disbelief and outrage since Thursday, June 18, when news broke that troops of Operation Hadin Kai had arrested a blind man for allegedly peddling illicit drugs inside an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Gwoza, Borno State. The arrest, which occurred on the evening of June 15, has left many Nigerians questioning the depth of the country's drug crisis and the extent to which criminal networks are exploiting even the most vulnerable members of society.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Sani Abdullahi, was apprehended during a raid on a suspected drug distribution point at the Government Secondary School IDP Camp in Gwoza. According to security sources, troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade carried out the operation around 8:00 p.m. as part of intensified efforts to tackle drug abuse and related crimes in displaced persons' camps and surrounding communities. Items recovered from Abdullahi included 32 wraps of cannabis, 21 wraps of Erinmore, four tablets of tramadol, and a wrap containing white tablets believed to be illicit substances. Also seized were a Tecno Android phone, two talismans, a wristwatch, and a Bluetooth device.

The arrest has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing shock that a blind person could be involved in drug trafficking within an IDP camp — a place meant to be a sanctuary for those displaced by insurgency. Some users questioned how a visually impaired individual could navigate the complexities of the drug trade, while others pointed to the broader issue of rising drug trafficking among persons with disabilities. “These latest arrests involving blind men further bust the bubble. If anything, it is a confirmation that the rot has eaten deep into our society,” one commentator wrote.

Others called for a re-evaluation of the country's approach to drug abuse and trafficking, arguing that the involvement of physically challenged individuals highlights the failure of social safety nets and the desperation that drives vulnerable citizens into crime. A defence official, commenting on the arrest, stated: “This arrest demonstrates our commitment to rooting out criminal elements that prey on vulnerable populations in IDP camps. We will not allow anyone to compromise the safety and stability of our communities through illicit activities”.

Residents and camp officials have welcomed the development, calling for continued vigilance to ensure IDP camps remain safe havens rather than breeding grounds for crime. The operation forms part of sustained efforts by security forces to combat drug trafficking and other criminal activities that could undermine security and stability in the North-East. According to military authorities, the general security situation across the theatre remains calm but unpredictable, while troops continue to maintain high morale and operational effectiveness in ongoing operations.

The arrest has also reignited discussions about the unusual rise of drug trafficking among physically challenged Nigerians. In 2023, the NDLEA had arrested three blind men operating a drug syndicate between Lagos and Kano, with narcotics worth N13 billion seized from them. Similarly, in 2017, six suspects, including a blind man and a cripple, were apprehended in Cross River State. These recurring incidents have raised concerns about the exploitation of persons with disabilities by drug cartels.

The suspect, Sani Abdullahi, is currently in the custody of the 26 Task Force Brigade, where he is undergoing further interrogation to uncover possible links to larger drug networks. As the investigation continues, the military has urged residents and camp officials to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could threaten the safety and stability of their communities.
