Amnesty International has condemned a deadly attack by armed gunmen on the Irigwe community of Angwan Magaji in Kamaru Ward, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, which left nine people dead and 11 others injured, in what the rights organisation described as one of the deadliest recent attacks in the southern part of the state. The assault occurred late on the night of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at about 1:00 a.m., when heavily armed assailants stormed the border community and opened fire on residents, causing panic and confusion as people attempted to flee for safety.
The attack also claimed the lives of two young children aged five and four years, according to the human rights organisation. The victims were identified by community sources and media reports as Jerry Doctor, 51; Danlami Magani, 49; Sunday Chibi, 53; Rita Abdullahi, 45; Sunday Elkan, 5; Esther Kefas, 5; Happy Friday, 6; Moses Daddy, 4; and Daddy Ibrahim, 28. The 11 injured victims included Halla Monday, Mary Yohanna, Jummai John, Charity Danjuma, Faith Yakubu, Omi Yakubu, Ali Sandiye, Asabe Victor, Srarina Simon, Talatu Sunday and ThankGod Danladi.
According to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Youth Movement, Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, the attackers invaded the community and unleashed violence on unsuspecting residents. Several victims were killed in their homes, and search efforts are still ongoing for residents reported missing after the incident. Amnesty International expressed deep concern over the continued insecurity in the region, where communities have faced recurrent killings, abductions, and violent attacks.
Describing the attack as one of the deadliest recent incidents in Southern Kaduna, Amnesty International criticized what it described as the authorities' failure to effectively address the persistent violence and ensure accountability for perpetrators, warning that the ongoing insecurity remains a serious threat to the right to life of residents. The organization called on Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate the attack, bring those responsible to justice, and strengthen measures to protect vulnerable communities across Southern Kaduna.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident. The attack has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Southern Kaduna, where communities have continued to experience recurrent attacks by armed groups, resulting in deaths, injuries and displacement of residents.
