The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully extinguished a fire outbreak on the third floor of the Polaris Bank building at 61/65 Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Thursday, June 18, 2026, preventing what could have been a major disaster in the busy commercial hub.
The incident was reported at approximately 11:33 a.m. and involved a stationary saloon car parked on the third floor of the 17-storey building, which serves as a parking facility, according to a statement by the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye. Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations were immediately deployed to the scene and swiftly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other vehicles and sections of the high-rise building.
Videos shared on social media captured thick plumes of smoke billowing from the structure as onlookers, including residents and business operators, gathered at the scene. Emergency responders worked to contain the blaze while preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings in the densely populated commercial area.
The only damage recorded was to the affected vehicle and its immediate surroundings, and no casualties or injuries were reported. “The firefighting operation has been successfully concluded, and normalcy has been fully restored to the area,” Adeseye said.
Polaris Bank also issued a statement reassuring the public that the fire was contained and that banking operations at the branch were not affected. “Earlier today, a fire incident occurred at our Broad Street Branch, Lagos, originating from a customer’s vehicle parked on the 3rd-floor car park. Our emergency response procedures were immediately activated, and with the swift intervention of firefighters and other emergency responders, the fire was successfully contained. We are pleased to confirm that there were no casualties or fatalities. Consequently, reports circulating on social media claiming that over 34 persons were feared dead are false and entirely inaccurate,” the bank said.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service assured residents of continued readiness to respond swiftly to emergencies across the state. The incident comes against the backdrop of previous fire tragedies on Lagos Island, including the Great Nigeria Building fire in December 2025, which claimed multiple lives.
