The University of Lagos has launched an investigation into reports of suspected water contamination in some hostels after students, particularly those in female residences, complained of vomiting, stooling and other health issues, the institution announced on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The development sparked anxiety across the campus, with several students in Moremi Hall, a female hostel, reportedly experiencing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever. Some students also alleged skin-related reactions, according to multiple reports. A concerned parent, who sent a save‑our‑souls message to Vanguard, said: “Please dear ones, my daughter in Moremi Hostel in Unilag just reported that a lot of the students have been vomiting and stooling for days now with high fever too. Kindly let’s escalate this so that authorities can act fast.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Head of the Communication Unit, Mrs Adejoke Alaga‑Ibraheem, the university said the matter was being treated with “utmost urgency and seriousness”. “Relevant departments have commenced a thorough assessment of the water supply system, including necessary water quality tests, to determine the accuracy of the reports and identify any potential risks,” the statement read. “Also, immediate interventions have been put in place to ensure that the welfare, health, and safety of all students are adequately protected.”

The University of Lagos Students’ Union said it had been engaging with authorities and monitoring developments closely. In a statement signed by the Students’ Union President, Akinpelu Bolaji, the union noted that no definitive medical evidence had yet linked the reported illnesses to the hostel water supply. “At this time, investigations are still ongoing, and no definitive link has been established between the reported health cases and the university’s hostel water supply,” the statement said. The union added that medical personnel at the University Medical Centre indicated that the cases examined so far had not been medically associated with the hostel water system, and that some affected students reside off campus.

Despite the absence of a confirmed link, the union disclosed that an inspection carried out after reports of discoloured water in one hostel block traced the issue to a borehole serving that particular block. As an immediate precautionary measure, the university suspended water supply from the affected source and provided alternative arrangements for residents. The union also confirmed that water samples had been collected from hostels for laboratory analysis, with results expected within 48 hours.

The university management urged members of the campus community to refrain from spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic, and assured that official updates would be communicated through approved channels once the assessment is concluded.
