An Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, has convicted and sentenced eight individuals to community service for indiscriminate waste disposal within the Abeokuta metropolis, in a ruling that strengthens the state's ongoing enforcement of environmental sanitation laws. The court, presided over by Magistrate A.K. Araba, found all eight defendants guilty on a two-count charge of illegal waste dumping and acts capable of endangering public health.

The offenders, comprising six females and two males, were arrested early on Friday, June 19, 2026, between the hours of 6:15 a.m. and 8:05 a.m., while dumping refuse on public roads at Isale-Igbein, Car-Wash and Abiola Way within the Abeokuta Magisterial District. They were prosecuted by Sanitarian Kehinde Ogunsola, a Medical Officer of Health with the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA). Ogunsola told the court that the waste emitted offensive odours and attracted flies, creating conditions capable of spreading cholera and other diseases. He further stated that indiscriminate dumping obstructs drainage channels, contributes to flooding, and endangers lives and property, adding that the actions contravened the Public Health Law of Ogun State, 2006, and Section 34(1) of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law, 2020.

Delivering his judgment, Magistrate A.K. Araba found the eight offenders – Oyebanjo Abidemi, Aminat Adewusi, Aminat Olarewaju, Omolana Olusola, Abiola Moridiya, Olaogun Mary, Abiodun Aromokun and Iwenya Sylvester – guilty on both counts. He sentenced them to perform community service within the premises of the Isabo Magistrates Court and ordered that their photographs be displayed on the court's notice board while carrying out the service. The magistrate also issued a stern warning that any of the convicts caught committing the same offence in the future would face imprisonment without the option of a fine, describing the measure as a deterrent to others.

Reacting to the judgment, the Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde, praised the Ogun State Judiciary for what he described as the proper interpretation and enforcement of the agency's laws. He said the ruling would strengthen ongoing efforts to eradicate indiscriminate waste disposal across the state and promote environmental cleanliness. Akintunde reaffirmed OGWAMA's commitment to intensifying enforcement operations in all parts of Ogun State to curb environmental violations and safeguard public health. He urged residents who still dispose of refuse indiscriminately to patronise accredited waste managers assigned to their communities, warning that violators would continue to face prosecution.

The latest sentencing follows a similar enforcement action in May 2026, when the court sentenced 14 persons to two weeks’ imprisonment with an option of a fine for indiscriminate waste disposal in parts of the state. The Ogun State Government has adopted community service as a correctional measure for waste offenders, combining enforcement with public awareness to promote a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
