Armed bandits have attacked Gabtu village in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing four people, looting shops across the community, stealing motorcycles, and rustling cattle belonging to residents of a nearby village.

The attack reportedly occurred on the morning of Friday, June 19, 2026, when the bandits invaded Gabtu village and opened fire on residents, throwing the community into panic and forcing many villagers to seek safety.

According to reports from local sources, the attackers moved through the village, shooting at residents and causing casualties. Four people were reportedly killed during the assault, while the bandits proceeded to loot shops and take away valuable items belonging to business owners.

The attackers were also reported to have stolen three motorcycles, which are commonly used by residents for transportation and farming activities.

In a related attack, nearby Taka Tsaba village was also targeted by the bandits, with reports indicating that the attackers rustled all cattle belonging to residents of the community.

The loss of livestock has further increased the hardship faced by affected families, as cattle remain a major source of livelihood for many rural communities in Zamfara State.

The latest incident adds to the continuing security challenges facing Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria’s North-West region, where armed criminal groups have carried out repeated attacks involving killings, kidnapping, cattle rustling, and destruction of property.

Communities across Zamfara have continued to call on security authorities to increase protection for rural settlements, particularly farming areas that remain vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.

Security analysts have linked the persistence of bandit attacks in the region to the activities of criminal groups operating from forest locations, where they organise raids and retreat after attacking communities.

The Nigerian military and other security agencies have continued operations aimed at disrupting bandit networks in Zamfara and neighbouring states through patrols, intelligence operations, and clearance missions.

However, residents say more security presence is needed in remote communities to prevent attacks and ensure quicker response when threats emerge.

As of the latest reports, security agencies had not issued an official statement confirming the casualties or announcing arrests connected to the Gabtu and Taka Tsaba attacks.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of rural residents in Zamfara, with calls for urgent measures to protect lives, property, and livelihoods.
