KANO, Kano State, Nigeria — June 20, 2026 — The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 14-year-old student, Maimuna Sani, popularly known as Nihal, following allegations surrounding the circumstances of her death at St. Louis Secondary School, Kano.

Maimuna, a Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS2) student of the Catholic girls’ boarding school, reportedly collapsed on Saturday, June 13, 2026, and was later confirmed dead at a medical facility after she was taken from the school.

The incident has generated public concern after conflicting accounts emerged regarding what happened before the teenager’s death.

According to reports from the family, school authorities informed them that Maimuna developed a health complication and was taken to the hospital. The family said they were told she suffered an asthma-related episode.

However, relatives and concerned individuals have raised questions over other accounts suggesting that the teenager may have been subjected to prolonged punishment after allegedly arriving late for prayer activities.

The claims circulating online allege that Maimuna was made to kneel for an extended period as punishment and that her condition worsened afterward. The family has called for a thorough investigation to determine whether the alleged punishment contributed to her death.

The teenager’s mother, Nusaiba, said she became concerned after receiving information from the school that her daughter was unwell and had been taken for medical attention.

According to the family, further questions arose when relatives reached the hospital and were reportedly asked whether Maimuna had a history of asthma.

The family expressed concern over what they described as inconsistencies in the explanations provided regarding the teenager’s final moments and demanded that authorities establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.

Following a petition by the family, the Kano State Police Command constituted a Special Investigation Panel to examine the matter.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the investigation panel is being led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shehu Idris.

According to the police, the panel has begun inviting teachers, students, and other relevant witnesses as part of efforts to establish the facts of the case.

Police authorities also confirmed that medical and forensic examinations are being conducted to determine the actual cause of Maimuna’s death.

The command said it would ensure that the investigation is conducted professionally and that anyone found responsible for wrongdoing would face the law.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has acknowledged the incident and said it is monitoring the investigation process.

Government officials stated that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the police inquiry.

The death has sparked calls from members of the public and child protection advocates for greater accountability in schools, particularly boarding institutions where students remain under the supervision of teachers and administrators.

Stakeholders have urged authorities to ensure that disciplinary measures used in schools do not endanger the safety, health, or dignity of students.

As the investigation continues, Maimuna’s family continues to seek answers over the circumstances that led to the death of the teenager, while authorities work to establish the facts behind the tragic incident.
