AWKA, Anambra State, Nigeria — June 20, 2026 — The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 15-year-old pregnant girl and arrested a suspect over alleged child exploitation and sexual abuse in the state.
The teenager was rescued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, during a police operation around St. Paul’s Secondary School, Achalla, in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, following intelligence reports concerning alleged criminal activities in the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement released on Friday, June 19, 2026, saying operatives from the Achalla Divisional Police Headquarters carried out the operation.
According to the police spokesperson, the raid was conducted following information about suspected activities involving youths allegedly linked to the use of crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as “Mkpuru Mmiri.”
During the operation, police officers rescued the teenage girl, who was reportedly heavily pregnant, and arrested a suspect identified as Tochukwu Nwora over allegations of child exploitation and sexual abuse.
Ikenga said preliminary investigations indicated that the teenager had allegedly been abused by several adult males at different locations, including Nando in Anambra East Local Government Area, Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, and Achalla in Awka North Local Government Area.
The police said some of the suspects allegedly took advantage of the girl’s vulnerable condition by offering her small amounts of money.
Following her rescue, the victim was placed under protective custody and taken to the Police Hospital in Awka for medical examination, treatment, and necessary support.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a detailed investigation.
Police authorities said the investigation would examine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse and determine whether any parent, guardian, or other individuals failed in their responsibilities or were involved.
The command also confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other persons suspected to be connected with the alleged abuse.
Child protection concerns have continued to attract attention in Nigeria, with authorities and rights organisations warning about the dangers of exploitation, sexual abuse, and neglect involving minors.
Security agencies have repeatedly urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving children and vulnerable persons to enable early intervention.
The police assured residents that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses and that anyone found responsible would face legal action.
