ADO-EKITI, Ekiti State, Nigeria — June 20, 2026 — A 76-year-old voter, Omi-Ata Kayode, has been unable to cast his vote at Ward 6, Polling Unit 2, Ado-West, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, after the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine reportedly failed to recognise his face.
Kayode, who was among the first voters to arrive at the polling unit, was ready to participate in the ongoing electoral process but could not proceed after the biometric accreditation device repeatedly failed facial verification.
The incident has raised concerns over possible delays and technical challenges affecting voter accreditation at some polling units.
Electoral officials at the unit were yet to confirm whether alternative verification procedures would be provided to allow the elderly voter to exercise his franchise.
The BVAS technology, introduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is designed to verify voters through biometric information, including fingerprints and facial recognition, before allowing them to vote.
Similar accreditation challenges have been reported during previous elections, with INEC often assuring voters that technical issues would be addressed to ensure eligible citizens are not disenfranchised.
As of the time of reporting, Kayode was still awaiting resolution at the polling unit.
Election observers and stakeholders continue to monitor polling centres across Ekiti State to document voter turnout, accreditation challenges, and the overall conduct of the election.
