During the Ekiti governorship election held on June 20, 2026, PDP candidate Wole Oluyede raised concerns over what he described as voter suppression, delays in the voting process, and alleged intimidation of party supporters by security personnel in parts of the state.
Oluyede made the allegations after arriving at Polling Unit 6, Ugele/Aroku Ward 3 in Ikere Local Government Area, where he later cast his ballot at about 9:31 a.m. The candidate said he visited the polling unit to observe the exercise and ensure that voters were able to participate freely in the democratic process.
Speaking shortly after voting, Oluyede expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of accreditation and voting at the polling unit, stating that the process was moving unusually slowly. He claimed that many voters had been waiting for an extended period while only a small number had been able to cast their ballots.
According to him, the delay raised concerns about whether the electoral process was functioning as expected. He questioned the efficiency of the procedures and suggested that technical or administrative issues might be affecting the smooth conduct of the election.
“People have been here for about one and a half hours, and only five people have voted in my polling unit,” Oluyede said. He added that similar situations had occurred in previous elections and called on electoral officials to address any challenges immediately.
The PDP candidate said he would remain at the polling station to monitor developments and ensure that eligible voters were not prevented from exercising their civic rights. He stressed that delays at polling units could discourage participation if not resolved quickly.
He also alleged that officials at the polling unit had experienced difficulties reaching an INEC technical officer, commonly referred to as RATECH, to resolve issues affecting the voting process. Oluyede said calls had reportedly been made for several minutes without receiving assistance.
“The INEC cannot disenfranchise these people. It is sad for democracy,” he said, while urging voters to remain calm and peaceful as the situation was being monitored.
The PDP candidate further raised concerns about the conduct of security personnel in some areas of Ikere. He alleged that some officers were intimidating voters and party supporters, particularly around the garage area near Ikere City Hall.
He called for restraint and professionalism from security agencies involved in election duties, emphasizing that their role should be to protect voters and maintain order rather than create fear among citizens.
The allegations by Oluyede came as residents across Ekiti participated in the governorship election, with voters expected to choose their preferred candidate among those contesting for leadership of the state. The election was closely watched due to the political importance of Ekiti and the wider implications for democratic competition in Nigeria.
Stone Reporters note that election periods in Nigeria have frequently witnessed concerns about logistics, technology challenges, security presence, and voter access. Electoral authorities have repeatedly stated that mechanisms are put in place to improve transparency, prevent malpractice, and ensure that citizens can participate without obstruction.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has continued to emphasize the importance of peaceful voting and adherence to electoral guidelines. Officials have encouraged political parties and candidates to report genuine concerns through appropriate channels while allowing election procedures to continue.
Political parties have historically raised complaints during elections, including allegations of delays, intimidation, and administrative difficulties. Such claims are usually subject to verification through official election monitoring processes and reports from accredited observers.
The Ekiti governorship election attracted attention from political stakeholders, civil society groups, and residents who expected a peaceful and credible exercise. The outcome of the election is expected to shape the political direction of the state and influence future electoral debates.
For many voters, the election represented an opportunity to participate in deciding the future leadership of Ekiti. Civic groups have continued to encourage citizens to remain patient, peaceful, and committed to democratic values throughout the voting process.
As voting continued across the state, Oluyede maintained that he remained confident in the ability of the people to make their voices heard. He appealed to supporters to remain calm while insisting that every eligible voter should have the opportunity to participate.
The PDP candidate’s concerns added to broader discussions about the need for efficient election management, effective deployment of technology, and responsible conduct by all stakeholders involved in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Authorities are expected to review complaints raised during the election as part of the broader assessment of the exercise. Any verified violations or irregularities would be addressed according to established electoral laws and procedures.
The Ekiti governorship election continues to highlight the importance of public confidence in democratic institutions. Analysts have noted that beyond the announcement of results, the credibility of any election depends on whether citizens believe the process allowed them to freely express their choices.
The events surrounding the poll also underline the responsibility of political actors, security agencies, electoral officials, and voters to protect democratic principles. Ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability remains central to strengthening public trust in elections.
