A wave of fear and anxiety has enveloped the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) community following the reported abduction of three students and the assassination of a businessman within hours of each other in the Nasarawa State capital.
According to multiple sources within the university community, suspected gunmen stormed the Living Seed Lodge, a privately owned student residence located around Maraban Akunza, an off-campus area popular among FULafia students, at approximately 11 p.m. on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. The armed men reportedly abducted three students from the facility.
Confirming the incident, the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, stated that the police received a distress call at about 9:20 p.m. from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of FULafia, alerting them that three students residing at Living Seed Lodge had been kidnapped by unidentified armed persons. The police immediately mobilised operatives to the scene and launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation. The prompt intervention led to the successful rescue of one of the abducted students, while intensive efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the two remaining victims.
The Commissioner of Police has directed all tactical and operational units to sustain rescue efforts until the remaining students are safely reunited with their families.
Reacting to the incident, a student, Catherine N. Saawuan, took to her Facebook page to appeal for prayers, expressing the growing sense of insecurity among students. "Dear friends and loved ones, please remember all students of Federal University of Lafia in your prayers. We are no longer feeling safe after the kidnapping that happened today," she wrote.
The reported abduction comes barely hours after the tragic killing of a businessman, Jamilu Yahaya Attach. According to accounts, Attach, who had recently gotten married, was reportedly shot dead by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in Lafia on Monday night.
The back-to-back incidents have sparked fear among residents and students, with many calling on security agencies and the Nasarawa State Government to intensify efforts to secure lives and property and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students. Security operatives have intensified search operations in the area and are pursuing intelligence leads aimed at apprehending the perpetrators and rescuing the victims unharmed.
The Nigeria Police Force has reassured residents and members of the university community of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging members of the public to provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations and rescue operations.
