The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his 38-year-old son for allegedly being in unlawful possession of four single-barrel guns, following a routine stop-and-search operation along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa, the state capital. The suspects, identified as Tibi Friday, 68, and his son Oyabrade Tibi, 38, both from Futoro Gbene Community in Ekeremor Local Government Area, were intercepted on Monday, July 6, 2026, at about 10:30 a.m.

According to a statement issued by the command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, operatives of the Anti-Vice Unit flagged down a commercial tricycle conveying the father and son. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered four single-barrel guns carefully concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in what investigators believe was an attempt to evade detection. The suspects reportedly told operatives they were travelling to Abua in neighbouring Rivers State at the time of their arrest.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two men were allegedly travelling to Abua, Rivers State, apparently to sell the guns that were concealed in one of the compartments of the tricycle. The police have since transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yenagoa for a discreet investigation to ascertain the source of the firearms and identify any other persons connected with the offence.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, reaffirmed the command's commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes across the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to assist security agencies in protecting lives and property. The police command has warned that the unlawful possession of firearms is a serious offence that will attract the full weight of the law, and reiterated its determination to sustain intelligence-led operations to rid the state of criminal elements.
