The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Zainab Marwa as a member of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), representing the North-East geopolitical zone. Her confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on NDDC during plenary on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

The report, originally sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Chairman of the committee and lawmaker representing Cross River South, was presented on his behalf by Senator Patrick Ndubueze (APC-Imo North). Presenting the report, Ndubueze said President Bola Tinubu had forwarded Marwa's nomination to the Senate, where it was referred to the committee for legislative action.

He said the committee conducted an open screening of the nominee to assess her competence, integrity, experience, and preparedness for the position. According to him, the committee found Marwa qualified for the appointment after reviewing her credentials and all relevant documents. "Having carefully screened the nominee and considered all relevant documents submitted, the committee is satisfied that she possesses the requisite qualifications, experience, integrity and competence required for the appointment," Ndubueze said. "Accordingly, the committee recommends that the Senate do confirm the appointment of Dr. Zainab Marwa as a member representing the North-East in the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission."

President Tinubu had forwarded Marwa's nomination to the Senate in May 2026 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the immediate past North-East representative on the board, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas. Namdas resigned his appointment on 30 March 2026 to pursue his governorship ambition in Adamawa State. In the letter conveying the nomination, which was read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said the appointment was made in line with Section 2 of the Niger Delta Development Commission Establishment Act, which empowers the President to appoint members of the commission's governing board subject to Senate confirmation.

Following the presentation of the committee's report, the Senate dissolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the report before adopting its recommendations. Senate President Akpabio subsequently put the confirmation to a voice vote. "The nomination of Dr. Zainab Marwa, representing the North-East in the Niger Delta Development Commission, is hereby confirmed as a member of the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission," Akpabio declared.

In his remarks, Akpabio commended the NDDC committee for handling the assignment promptly and thanked senators for their contributions. "I thank the committee on NDDC for the expeditious manner in which this assignment was carried out. I thank all my colleagues for their contributions," he said. He wished the newly confirmed board member well and expressed hope that her contribution would enhance the development and progress of the Niger Delta region. "I wish the confirmed nominee, Dr. Zainab Marwa, well as a member of the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission. I hope that her contribution will enhance the development and progress of the Niger Delta region," Akpabio added.

With the Senate's approval, Marwa is now expected to formally assume her role on the NDDC Governing Board, where she will join other members in shaping policies and programmes aimed at accelerating development in the Niger Delta region.
