The Cross River State Police Command has announced that it will commence strict enforcement of all extant traffic laws and road safety regulations across the state, warning motorists, commercial transport operators, tricycle and motorcycle riders, and all other road users that compliance with traffic laws is not optional but a legal obligation. The directive, announced in a press release issued on Friday, August 7, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, follows the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at addressing the growing concern over the blatant disregard for traffic laws and road safety regulations by some motorists and other road users.
According to the police, the trend of traffic violations has contributed to traffic congestion, obstruction of the free flow of traffic, road crashes, and avoidable risks to lives and property. Consequently, officers have been directed to enforce all extant traffic laws professionally, fairly, and without fear or favour. Members of the public are advised to obey all traffic signs, signals, and road markings; avoid one-way driving, speeding, dangerous overtaking, wrongful parking, and other traffic violations; ensure that driver's licences, vehicle particulars, and other relevant documents are valid and up to date; and cooperate with police officers and other authorised traffic enforcement personnel carrying out lawful duties.
The Command emphasized that traffic offenders will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, while vehicles involved in traffic offences may be impounded where necessary. The enforcement directive also applies to police personnel, and any officer found violating traffic regulations or compromising the enforcement process will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force. The Cross River State Police Command urged all residents to support this initiative by complying with traffic laws as they work together towards safer roads through responsible driving.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Cross River State, where traffic violations have been identified as a major contributor to road crashes and fatalities. The police have called on all road users to embrace a culture of responsible driving and to see compliance with traffic laws as a shared responsibility. As the enforcement begins, the police have assured the public that the exercise will be conducted professionally and without harassment, while warning that anyone found violating traffic regulations will face the full weight of the law.
