A wave of terror swept through the Malamai community in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State on the night of Thursday, August 6, 2026, when heavily armed bandits invaded the village, killing one resident, injuring another, and abducting several others while looting homes and valuables. The attack, which lasted for several hours, has once again exposed the vulnerability of rural communities in Nigeria's North-West, where bandits have continued to operate with impunity despite repeated military operations and government assurances.
According to local sources who spoke to journalists on Friday, August 7, the assailants stormed the community at approximately 10:00 p.m., firing sporadically to instil fear before moving from house to house in search of victims and valuables. One resident was fatally shot during the attack, while another sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment. The gunmen also abducted an unspecified number of residents, including women and children, and carted away cash, mobile phones, and other valuables before fleeing into the surrounding bush. The Malamai community, located in Isa LGA, has been a recurring target for bandit attacks. In July 2026, suspected bandits abducted six women and one man during a fresh attack on Isa town, also in the same local government area. The frequency of these attacks has left residents living in constant fear, with many calling on the government to take decisive action to protect lives and property. The inability of security forces to prevent these incidents has raised questions about the effectiveness of the state's security architecture, with residents accusing authorities of failing to respond promptly to distress calls.
Efforts to reach the Sokoto State Police Command for an official comment on the Malamai attack were unsuccessful as of the time of this report. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa'i, could not be reached for comment. However, the police have previously confirmed attacks in Isa LGA, including a recent operation that saw troops recover stolen cattle and arrest suspects. The lack of an immediate response to the Malamai attack has further deepened residents' sense of abandonment and frustration.
