Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have rescued four kidnap victims who were abducted by suspected armed men along the Ugbokun axis of the Lagos-Benin Expressway in a late-night operation that combined aggressive bush-combing with drone technology. The rescue, which took place on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at approximately 10:40 p.m., was announced in a statement issued on Friday, August 7, 2026, by the command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem. The victims — Muritala Babatunde, Bello Aminat, Otor Prince, and Yeiyah Gift — were rescued unhurt and have since been reunited with their families.
According to the police, the incident began when information was received that about three armed men, dressed in vigilante uniforms, had blocked the Ugbokun axis of the expressway with logs of wood and leaves. The hoodlums then attacked motorists and abducted some occupants into the forest. Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Okada Division immediately mobilised a combined team of police operatives, members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), local hunters, and other security partners to the scene. The operatives embarked on an aggressive bush-combing operation, enhanced by drone technology to search the difficult terrain and aid the rescue mission. The sustained pressure mounted on the criminals forced them to abandon their captives and flee, leading to the successful rescue of the four victims.
The Edo State Police Command commended the bravery, professionalism, and synergy exhibited by all personnel involved in the operation, reassuring residents of its relentless offensive against kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state. The command also assured that operations were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice, while urging members of the public to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information. The rescue operation underscores the growing use of technology and community collaboration in combating kidnapping in Edo State, which has witnessed a surge in abductions along the Benin-Lagos corridor in recent months.
