The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dissolved all party caucuses across the state's 16 local government areas with immediate effect, in a sweeping restructuring move aimed at repositioning the opposition party for the 2027 general elections. The decision, announced on Sunday, August 9, 2026, by the State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, marks the beginning of what party leaders describe as a comprehensive reorganisation of the party's political machinery ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The dissolution was reached by the State Executive Committee and other critical stakeholders following a closed-door meeting with the party leader and former President of the 8th Senate, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, during his recent homecoming and stakeholder engagements in the state. Adewara stated that "the journey towards 2027 has effectively commenced," adding that the party considered it necessary to refresh its structures, bring in new hands, broaden participation and create a more effective and inclusive political machinery capable of delivering victory for the PDP at all levels.
The party leadership was careful to frame the dissolution not as a rejection of the outgoing caucuses but as a necessary step toward strengthening the party's electoral fortunes. "We sincerely appreciate all members of the outgoing caucuses for their dedication, sacrifices, loyalty and contributions to the growth and development of the PDP in Kwara State," Adewara said. The party expressed confidence that members of the dissolved caucuses would continue to contribute their wealth of experience to the collective success of the PDP as it moves toward 2027.
The restructuring comes as the PDP in Kwara seeks to rebuild from the political tsunami that swept the party out of power in 2019. That year, under the famous "O-to-ge" slogan, voters in Kwara overwhelmingly rejected the Saraki political dynasty, with the PDP losing all national and state assembly seats in the state. Since then, the party has struggled to regain its footing, plagued by leadership disputes and internal crises that have distracted it from preparing for subsequent elections.
The crisis within the Kwara PDP has been particularly acute in recent months. In June 2026, two factional governorship candidates emerged from rival factions within the party, one from the Aminu-Turaki led faction and another from the Saraki-Wike faction. The internal discord prompted one of the governorship candidates to sever political ties with Saraki, further deepening the divisions within the party. The dissolution of all caucuses appears to be Saraki's latest attempt to reassert control over the party structure and present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.
The timing of the dissolution is significant. Just one day before the announcement, on August 8, 2026, it was reported that the Kwara PDP and 15 aggrieved gubernatorial aspirants of the All Progressives Congress had commenced negotiations on the sharing of elective positions ahead of 2027. The talks suggest that the PDP is actively seeking to exploit divisions within the ruling APC, which has itself been rocked by internal disputes among its governorship aspirants.
The party has called on all members to remain calm, united and committed as the necessary mechanisms for the recruitment, constitution and inauguration of new caucuses across the state are already being put in place. Adewara stressed that the decision to dissolve the caucuses was taken within the powers vested in the State Executive Committee to undertake measures considered necessary to strengthen, reposition and reorganise the party in the overall interest of its members and its electoral fortunes.
For political observers in Kwara, the dissolution of all caucuses represents a high-stakes gamble by Saraki and the party leadership. By clearing out existing structures, the PDP risks alienating loyal party members while betting that fresh faces and a more inclusive approach will galvanise support ahead of 2027. Whether this strategy will succeed in reversing the party's fortunes in a state that has decisively turned its back on the Saraki dynasty remains to be seen.
