The Kebbi State Government has pledged to provide sustained support for the families of the 10 police officers and other victims who lost their lives in a devastating terrorist attack along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area, as the state mourns what Governor Nasir Idris described as a "painful and heartbreaking sacrifice" made in the service of the nation. The governor made the pledge on Tuesday, August 12, 2026, when a high‑powered delegation from the Inspector‑General of Police, Olatunji Disu, led by Deputy Inspector‑General of Police Umar Dada, paid him a condolence visit at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, August 10, 2026, unfolded when a heavily armed group of about 240 bandits travelling on more than 200 motorcycles moved from the Sangeko Gap area of Dansadau District in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State towards Kebbi. Residents said the bandits operated in three groups and spent the night in a forest between Kakihum and Makuku before advancing towards Maburya. They encountered a mobile police checkpoint while attempting to enter the community and overpowered the officers in a fierce gun battle.
Kebbi State Police Command spokesperson DSP Bashir Usman confirmed that 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the encounter, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were also burnt. Two civilians also lost their lives, and two other police officers sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention. The fallen officers were described as brave personnel who fought with courage and professionalism while carrying out their constitutional duties.
Speaking at the Government House, Governor Idris commiserated with the Inspector‑General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, the families of the fallen officers, and the people of Kebbi State over the devastating incident. He noted that the officers were deployed to the area to support sister security agencies in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities threatening the peace and security of Kebbi State. "It is our tradition in Kebbi to support the families of fallen security personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty," the governor declared. "The Kebbi State Government will come to the aid of the families of the officers who lost their lives". He stressed that the sacrifice of security personnel who paid the supreme price in the line of duty would never be forgotten, assuring the affected families that the government would provide the necessary intervention and support.
Earlier, DIG Umar Dada conveyed the condolences of the Inspector‑General of Police to Governor Idris, the people of Kebbi State, and the families of the fallen officers. He assured the governor that the police would intensify efforts to identify, track down, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the deadly attack. "Please, be rest assured that we are not going to relent in our efforts. All those responsible for the attack will be arrested and brought to book," he said. DIG Dada commended the Kebbi State Government for its continued support and cooperation with the police and other security agencies operating in the state. He also disclosed that a police squadron would soon be established in Kebbi State to further strengthen security operations and enhance the protection of lives and property.
The delegation's visit followed the killing of the 10 police officers and other persons during the gun battle with terrorists along the Rafin Makuku axis. Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in the collective effort to protect communities and restore lasting peace across the state. Meanwhile, Operation Hadin Kai reported that sustained offensives on terrorist positions and enclaves have triggered a 213 per cent rise in insurgents and their families surrendering to security operatives in the North‑East recently, reflecting the diminishing capacity of terrorist elements to retain their fighters and sustain prolonged operations.
The pledge of support from the Kebbi State Government is expected to provide some relief to the families of the fallen officers, who now face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives after the loss of their breadwinners. Governor Idris reiterated that the government would continue to work closely with security agencies to strengthen security, protect vulnerable communities, support security personnel, and ensure that perpetrators of terrorism and other criminal acts are brought to justice.
As the state mourns the loss of its gallant officers, the planned deployment of additional police resources is aimed at preventing further attacks and reinforcing the message that those who threaten the peace and security of Kebbi State will face the full force of the law.
