Forty days into a marriage that should have been a lifetime of love and companionship, 19-year-old Aisha Musa found herself on the other side of the law, accused of the unthinkable: attempting to murder her husband by slipping poison into his meal. The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the arrest on Thursday, August 14, 2026, after the incident, which occurred on August 12 in Gwamma Village, Bauchi Local Government Area, sent shockwaves through the community and ignited a fierce debate about the pressures of young marriage and the fragility of trust.
According to the police, the tragic sequence of events began at about 3:15 p.m. on August 12, when Aisha Musa, a bride of just 40 days, allegedly introduced a poisonous substance into her husband's meal. For hours, nothing seemed amiss. But as evening fell, the effects of the poison began to take hold. At about 7:40 p.m., a distress call was received from an unidentified woman residing in the Wunti Dada area of Bauchi, who reported the incident to the police. The report triggered an immediate response from operatives of the 'C' Division, Tafawa Balewa Estate, who raced to the scene.
The victim was swiftly evacuated and rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where medical personnel fought to stabilise him. As of Thursday, he was reported to be in stable condition and receiving treatment. Police operatives, meanwhile, moved quickly to apprehend the suspect. During interrogation, Aisha Musa allegedly made a confessional statement admitting to the offence. An empty bottle suspected to have contained poison, along with remnants of the food, were recovered from the scene and registered as exhibits.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and thorough investigation. The suspect, who is currently in police custody, will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
The case has drawn attention to the rising incidence of domestic violence and extreme acts of desperation within marriages, particularly among young couples in northern Nigeria. While the specific motive for the alleged poisoning remains unclear, the incident has raised uncomfortable questions about the pressures facing newlyweds, the mental health of young brides, and the breakdown of communication in relationships that are often rushed into without adequate preparation.
