The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the restoration of four previously suppressed State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi States, following court judgments directing the electoral body to reinstate the additional seats. The decision, contained in a press statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, by the commission's National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, brings the total number of restored constituencies in the two states to nine.
The newly restored constituencies are Abraka, Isoko North II, and Ughelli South II State Constituencies in Delta State, and Yagba West II State Constituency in Kogi State. The restoration follows earlier court orders that had already led to the reinstatement of five other constituencies in the two states. With the latest additions, the total number of State House of Assembly seats in Delta and Kogi has now been increased to reflect the court-mandated restoration.
INEC has fixed August 21 to 25, 2026, for the conduct of party primaries for the restored constituencies. This window coincides with the period already scheduled for primaries for bye-elections to fill vacancies in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies of Bauchi State, Udu State Constituency of Delta State, and Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State. Elections into all these constituencies have been fixed for September 19, 2026.
The commission clarified that all other timelines and activities contained in the already published revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election shall apply to the restored constituencies. Political parties have been requested to submit notices of their various primaries to the commission before their scheduled dates.
The restoration of the constituencies follows a protracted legal battle over the suppression of state assembly seats in Delta and Kogi States. The courts had earlier ruled that the suppression of the constituencies was unlawful and ordered INEC to restore them. The commission has now complied with those orders, paving the way for the conduct of primaries and elections in the affected constituencies.
For the people of Abraka, Isoko North II, Ughelli South II, and Yagba West II, the restoration of their constituencies means they will now have additional representation in their respective State Houses of Assembly. The development is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in the two states, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
