The Osun State Police Command has arrested six suspects, including four employees of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and two welders, for allegedly vandalising and stealing electricity infrastructure in Ikirun, Osun State. The suspects were caught red-handed early Tuesday morning while cutting down a high-tension powerline pole, an act that has thrown the town and surrounding communities into prolonged darkness in recent months.
The arrest followed credible intelligence received at about 6:00 a.m., prompting police operatives attached to the Ikirun Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, to visit the scene. The suspects were found cutting the high-tension pole with a cutting machine powered by a generating plant. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that the six suspects were arrested at the scene of the crime.
The four IBEDC personnel were identified as Onabamiji Emmanuel, 55; Bolaji Odusanya, 51; Alimi Akeem, 36; and Balogun Kehinde, 52, who was described as an IBEDC security personnel. The two other suspects were identified as Oyewo Hammed, 31, and Oladosu Hammed, 22, both welders. According to the police, the suspects belonged to a syndicate believed to be responsible for the persistent vandalisation and theft of electricity cables and other power infrastructure in Ikirun and its environs.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects included a cutting machine, a generating plant, and a welding machine allegedly used in the operation. The police noted that the activities of vandals had contributed to prolonged darkness experienced in the town and surrounding communities in recent months.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation. The police said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command warned individuals and groups involved in the vandalism, destruction, or theft of public infrastructure to desist from such criminal acts, assuring that its operatives would continue to deploy intelligence and operational resources to detect and apprehend offenders. The police also urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist in protecting critical infrastructure and combating crime across the state.
“The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Zungura, psc(+), mnips, has assured members of the public that the Command remains resolute in protecting public infrastructure and ensuring that individuals involved in acts capable of sabotaging critical government and public utilities are brought to justice,” the statement read in part.
The arrest of IBEDC staff allegedly involved in vandalising their own employer's infrastructure has raised serious concerns about insider complicity in the destruction of public utilities. Ikirun and its environs have been grappling with incessant vandalisation and theft of cables and other electrical assets, which have left the town in total darkness for months. The police believe the syndicate's activities have been a major factor in the prolonged power outages affecting the area.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of infrastructure vandalism in Nigeria, where critical public utilities are increasingly targeted by criminal syndicates. The involvement of employees of the very companies meant to protect these assets adds a troubling dimension to the crisis. The police have assured residents that the investigation will be thorough and that all those found culpable will face the full wrath of the law.
As the case moves to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry, the people of Ikirun and surrounding communities await justice and, hopefully, an end to the darkness that has plagued their lives.
