A man with a history of cerebral haemorrhage has accused medical doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, in Ogun State, of neglecting his medical condition, manhandling his wife, and dragging both of them to a police station instead of providing emergency care. The patient, Adedamola Adetayo, described the Sunday, August 30, 2026, incident as a “shocking” four-hour ordeal.
Adetayo, who had been receiving treatment at the hospital, said his health had been deteriorating for about two weeks. He had previously requested an earlier appointment with his neurologists but was told to wait until September 15, 2026. As his condition worsened, he went to the FMC emergency unit on Sunday with his wife, hoping to see a doctor.
Upon arrival at the Idi-Aba facility at about 1 p.m., Adetayo said he was initially prevented by a security officer from entering the emergency ward and asked to wait outside. Feeling weak, he noticed an empty chair inside the unit and sat down. A doctor then allegedly approached and insisted that he leave the chair and come outside before he would be attended to. “I found that to be very illogical and inconsiderate, so I didn't obey it,” Adetayo said. The doctor walked back into the ward and told him plainly that he would not attend to him.
The situation escalated when a senior doctor, whom Adetayo identified as a member of the Resident Doctors' Union, allegedly intervened aggressively. “He came out from God-knows-where blasting from all cylinders, cursing, swearing and threatening,” Adetayo alleged. The patient claimed the doctor ordered him out of the emergency ward and became agitated when he insisted on his right to receive medical attention at a public facility. Adetayo further alleged that the doctor ordered other medical personnel to stop their work.
Several other doctors reportedly joined the confrontation. Instead of checking his vital signs or assessing his condition, Adetayo alleged that the doctors contacted the police and took him and his wife to the office of the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Raheem Quadri. “Not once did they take my vitals except when the police had arrived and they needed to be sure, perhaps, that I was fit enough to be locked in police cell and processed for prison remand,” he said. Adetayo also accused the doctors of physically manhandling his wife during the confrontation.
The doctors allegedly spent considerable time at the police station pursuing the matter rather than attending to patients. The DPO, whom Adetayo described as “an exceptionally sound professional,” eventually intervened. Adetayo said the entire ordeal lasted about four hours, from his arrival at 1 p.m. until he left around 5:30 p.m.. “From the over two hours I spent inside the emergency unit unattended till the time we got to the Police DPO at about 3:30pm, left the DPO at about 4:10pm and when I finally left the hospital at 5:30pm, these doctors didn't ask for my name nor my registration number with their hospital,” he said.
He expressed particular concern that despite his history of cerebral haemorrhage, the medical personnel allegedly failed to access his existing medical records. Adetayo also linked his experience to a 2009 incident when his 16-year-old brother-in-law died after allegedly receiving no medical attention at the same emergency ward. He called for the doctors involved to be held accountable. “You can imagine that male doctors, about four of them, manhandled my wife and still wanted to lock me up with my condition of a stroke,” he said.
As of the time of this report, the management of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, had not issued a public response to the allegations. SaharaReporters is investigating and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
