Abiodun Ajayi, a former Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government and Permanent Member III of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has officially resigned his position to take on a new political role as the Director-General of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo's campaign for the Ogun Central senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections. The resignation, conveyed in a letter dated August 31, 2026, and addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, marks the latest political realignment in Ogun State as the 2027 elections draw closer.
In his resignation letter, Ajayi expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve in the state government, describing his tenure at SUBEB as a valuable chapter in his public service journey. However, he made it clear that his decision to step down was driven by his emerging political responsibilities and the need to avoid any conflict between his official duties and partisan activities. "My decision to resign has been carefully considered and is principally borne out of my emerging political responsibilities," Ajayi stated. He added that rather than finding himself in a position where he might have to balance competing responsibilities, expectations, or political orientations, he believed it was "more honourable, responsible and principled" to voluntarily relinquish his appointment.
Speaking with journalists, Ajayi confirmed that he had resigned about three days prior but was quick to dismiss reports suggesting that the move was a prelude to his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He clarified that he had previously served as Director-General of Obasanjo's campaign during her gubernatorial ambition under the APC, and she had now entrusted him with leading her 2027 Senate campaign. "I was the DG of Iyabo Obasanjo during her gubernatorial ambition under APC, and she has equally appointed me to lead her Senate campaign," Ajayi said, while reaffirming his gratitude to Governor Abiodun for the opportunity to serve.
The resignation comes amid a significant political shift in Ogun State, where Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, formally returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in June 2026 after leaving the APC. The party subsequently presented her as its candidate for Ogun Central ahead of the 2027 election. Her return to the PDP followed her earlier attempt to secure the APC governorship ticket, an ambition that did not materialise after the party adopted Senator Solomon Adeola as its preferred candidate. She is now preparing for a fresh contest in the senatorial district she previously represented.
Ajayi's resignation has triggered political interest across Ogun State, with observers viewing his reported alignment as a move that could strengthen the campaign's political mobilisation as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum. While his resignation from SUBEB is confirmed by his letter, the document itself does not expressly state that he has resigned his APC membership or joined the PDP. His reported defection and proposed role in Senator Obasanjo's campaign would therefore require confirmation from Ajayi or the relevant political parties. Nonetheless, the development reflects the increasing political realignments in Ogun State, where politicians and stakeholders are repositioning ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.
