What began as a minor disagreement between two students at the Lagos State University College of Medicine ended with blood on hostel floors, torn clothes, and a 300-level Nursing student fighting for justice from a hospital bed. The Lagos State University has condemned in the strongest terms a disturbing incident in which a mother stormed into a female hostel and brutally assaulted her daughter's roommate, leaving the victim with severe injuries to her eye and body.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the LASU College of Medicine hostel in Ikeja, has sent shockwaves through the university community and sparked widespread outrage on social media. The victim, Adebayo Oluwatumininu, a 300-level Nursing student, was allegedly attacked by the mother of her roommate, Hassan Temiloluwa, a Physiotherapy student. According to the Lagos State University Students' Union (LASUSU), the trouble began when Hassan had a disagreement with Oluwatumininu and reported it to her mother. Hours later, that mother arrived on campus—not to mediate, but to fight.
Video clips that have since gone viral on social media show the woman descending on the hapless student, grabbing, pushing, and repeatedly striking her during a confrontation inside the hostel room. The footage is raw and painful: a mother, driven by rage, throwing punches at a young woman old enough to be her daughter. In the clip, the student is heard pleading, "Mommy, please, stop! Mommy!" while the woman shouted in Yoruba and ordered her to sit down amid the commotion. The woman did not stop at beating; she also tore the student's clothes and inflicted severe injuries across her body while other students watched in shock.
The attack left Oluwatumininu with a severe injury to her eye and other parts of her body. Officials of the students' union at the Ikeja Campus intervened and rushed her to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for emergency medical assessment and treatment. A medical report on the extent of her injuries is expected to provide further details.
"A student who spends her days learning how to save lives, now a patient herself. Bandages where there should be textbooks. Pain where there should be lectures. Fear where there should be safety," a female student who witnessed the incident told Platforms Africa. The attack has left the LASU College of Medicine community reeling. Parents send their children to school to learn, not to be assaulted. Hostels are supposed to be safe spaces, not battlegrounds for adult grievances.
Responding to enquiries, LASU confirmed that the matter had been addressed by the university but condemned the incident in the strongest terms. "The matter has been addressed by the University. However, we condemn this in the strongest terms," the institution said. The university did not provide details of the circumstances surrounding the incident or disclose the specific measures taken in response.
The LASU Students' Union has also condemned the use of violence in resolving disputes, stressing that disagreements involving students should never degenerate into physical attacks. "No disagreement should escalate into physical assault," the union said. The union further disclosed that the mother of Hassan Temiloluwa had been taken into police custody and was expected to be arraigned in court on charges of physical assault and threats. "Legal action has also been taken. The mother of Hassan Temiloluwa is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court today on charges of physical assault and alleged threats," the union stated.
Meanwhile, Hassan Temiloluwa is expected to appear before the university's Disciplinary Committee over her alleged involvement in the incident. Her appearance before the disciplinary committee should not be interpreted as a finding of guilt, as the university process is intended to examine the circumstances and allow the parties involved to present their accounts.
The incident has generated a wider discussion about the role of parents when their children become involved in disputes at tertiary institutions. Students are now asking hard questions: How did an adult gain access to the hostel to commit such violence? What protection exists for students when disagreements escalate beyond the classroom? Across campus, one sentence keeps repeating among students: "This could have been me".
The case is now proceeding on two fronts: the police and courts are handling the alleged criminal aspects of the case, while the university investigates possible breaches of its disciplinary regulations. As Oluwatumininu begins her recovery, the LASU community and the nation at large are left to grapple with a sobering reality: a mother's fury has left a student in hospital, a community in shock, and a university forced to confront how far rage can go when it walks through the school gates.
