Tragedy struck the Alesh Market area of Ajah in Lagos State on Saturday evening, September 5, 2026, when a professional hairstylist, identified simply as Elvis, was shot dead by suspected armed robbers. The incident, which has thrown the community into mourning, occurred as Elvis was returning from his place of work, according to a police source who confirmed the event to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, September 8. The robbers, whose number could not be immediately ascertained, had reportedly attacked people around the market and were dispossessing them of their belongings when they encountered Elvis. In a fatal act of defiance, the hairstylist resisted the robbers during the attack, prompting them to shoot him in the head.
The police source revealed that a report was made detailing how Elvis was returning from work when the robbers attacked him. The assailants made away with the belongings of some passersby who were also attacked during the incident. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident on Tuesday but stated that no suspect had been arrested yet and that investigations were ongoing.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, lamenting the frequent cases of harassment and robbery. The resident called for increased police patrols, especially around the market at night, warning that the criminals were "gradually going out of control". The killing of Elvis adds to the growing list of violent crimes in Lagos, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect residents and business owners. As the police continue their investigation, the community of Ajah is left to mourn a promising life cut short by the greed of armed criminals.
